Our guest in this episode is Dr. Kristin Whitney, who is an Assistant Professor in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Injured Runners Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is also the Boston Marathon Medical Tracking Program Team Captain. We talk about Kristin's experiences and perspectives in these roles and how she has used her learnings and expertise to improve performance for others. She shares her story of a clinical care team that made a huge impact in her and her family's life and how that fueled her passion to bring excellent clinical care to so many today. Her research spans three themes: 1) injury/crash biomechanics to improve car safety design elements 2) osteoporosis in aging and 3) the effects of space and microgravity on astronaut musculoskeletal systems. She uses a number of imaging modalities and modeling techniques to explore these themes and improve human biomechanics and health. She also directs university graduate and undergraduate programs to train the next generation of leaders and shares some tips on mentorship and building community.

Additional clarification: To add to our discussion about discussing feature identification, we wanted to add the note that the salient points for the neural network are points that are not necessarily equivalent to the locations that markers are placed. With a physical marker, palpation identifies bony landmarks. For salient features it is less important that the marker represent a bony prominence than it is a location that can be reliably identified on a video image. It turns out that the reliable locations are not coincident with a bony prominence.

For today’s conversation, Melissa and Hannah invite Professor Jamie Zeitzer to discuss his work on sleep. Jamie is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, conducting research in the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine.  Jamie is very “light focused” in his research, working a lot with circadian rhythms, which are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle. Americans spend just about 7% of their time in natural light and our circadian rhythms are very sensitive to lights. Jamie recommends going outside just a half hour every day can help set us up for better sleep at night. Additionally, exercise, regular routines, and temperatures can be important to getting better sleep. He also recommends being more cognizant of what is helpful and relaxing to you before going to sleep.]]>

Abby is an award-winning Professor of Epidemiology & Population Health and of Medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center.  Her research focuses on the development, evaluation, and translation of public health intervention to reduce chronic disease in the US and globally. Through her research, Abby has found that one of the main barriers to healthy movement practices is environment.  Thus, her research centers not only on individuals, but individuals within given contexts.  Abby explains what it can look like for an environment to foster movement, encourages simple queues and social support, and describes different forms of healthy movement.  They end the conversation with a discussion about the intersection of human and planetary and what Abby is most excited about in her field.

In this bonus episode, we talk with the founder of BGDSTEM, Cynthia Chapple, as she shares how they designed STEM programs for young black girls rooted in scholarship, training, empowerment, equity, and mentorship. She teaches us the importance of knowing your why and listening to the stories of the people you are trying to serve. We hope this episode is a reminder of the responsibility we have in creating a more and diverse equitable future in STEM. We can take action today - volunteer with or donate to BGDSTEM or learn from their experiences to become a better facilitator of STEM knowledge in whatever capacity you can.

He is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Psychosomatic Research.

He shares helpful tips on the peer review process as well as reinforced why it is so important and should be part of our role as scientists. This episode includes an interview with three researchers in the field of injury biomechanics: Dr. Pierre Guy, Dr. Peter Cripton, and Dr. Gunter Siegmund.

In this interview, Loay and Emily introduce injury biomechanics as a topic and navigate the interdisciplinary aspects of working in such a field. Dr. Guy is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon who researches hip fracture injury biomechanics with Dr. Cripton, a mechanical engineering professor and researcher. Dr. Siegmund is a lead engineer at MEA Forensic and collaborates with Dr Cripton in studying automotive and neck-related injury biomechanics. The three discuss how the fields of medicine, forensics, engineering, and teaching all come into play as necessary and collaborative components of injury biomechanics research. Topics range from personal pathways to current careers, the use of human surrogates, future technologies, principles fundamental to injury biomechanics, and examples of different professions that are integral to successful collaboration in the field.]]>
