Rebecca obtained her B.S. degree in Family and Child Development from Virginia Tech. She later earned her M.Ed. in Counselor Education, followed by a Professional Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitative Counseling, both from VCU. She spent over 20 years working as a school counselor, where she developed valuable experience in working with children and their families.

Rebecca tends to use strengths-based and mindfulness approaches, as well as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), to help individuals discover their own personal goals and work towards achieving them. While her background and main area of interest are in working with children, she will work with any age and population to address concerns with anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, trauma, family relationships, transitions, and life changes. Rebecca will work with clients in-person or virtually.

<![CDATA[Welcome to the Resilience Podcast! Returning for another episode today is our Operations Director, Katelyn Kiley! Join us today to learn more about how trauma impacts the brain through Katelyn’s training and experience!

More about Katelyn:

Katelyn Kiley, LPC, collaborates with clients to achieve lasting change by clarifying and fostering present-day skills for stability, coping, and connection, while also holding space for the deeper, embodied healing that allows clients to actually access those skills when they need them.

In her sessions, Katelyn is thoughtful, nonjudgmental, open and compassionate. She is a trauma-informed therapist, which means that she takes care to establish a safe and supportive environment for change, and assists clients with noticing and working with their experience not only in thinking brain but in body as well. (If this sounds too woo-woo for you, don’t worry! Katelyn loves engaging with skepticism, and will adjust to match your level of comfort and safety.) She enjoys working with clients to help them connect to their present-moment experience and explore their values across all aspects of their identity, in order to discover and cultivate a life that is meaningful and fulfilling for them.

Katelyn is trained in EMDR, an approach to therapy that utilizes bilateral stimulation (a fancy name for movement on both sides of the body) to support the nervous system in order to allow clients to desensitize and process overwhelming life experiences. Because EMDR engages not just the thinking brain but also the body, it can address stuck points that more cognitive approaches are unable to reach. Because our nervous systems are our stress response systems, EMDR can be helpful with any mental health condition where stress is a factor—which is to say, all of them.

Prior to joining Resilience Counseling in 2021, Katelyn accumulated a variety of clinical experience, including providing family therapy services to families facing a range of complex issues as an FFT clinician, intensive in-home therapy services and therapeutic mentoring to high-risk children and adolescents, parent support services, and outpatient counseling and advocacy work for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Katelyn received her BA from the University of Virginia and her MEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The College of William and Mary. In addition to her work with clients, Katelyn is the Director of Operations for Resilience Counseling. Katelyn is LGBTQIA+ affirming and a culturally responsive therapist. She works with individuals aged 16+ and couples.]]>

<![CDATA[Emma Cohen is a Licensed Professional Counselor and obtained her undergraduate degree in Human Development from Virginia Tech. After working in the non-profit sector for two years, she was reminded of her passion for the counseling profession. Emma went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Virginia Tech in 2020.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Emma practices from a non-pathological lens. She fervently believes symptoms and “disorders” are purposeful explanations of how we learned to adapt and cope in times of stress. Emma feels deeply honored to work alongside those struggling with a variety of concerns: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, eating disorders, substance use issues, attention-deficit disorders and gender-identity concerns. She believes in the power of incorporating mind, body and spirit into her work as we are incapable of healing without the consideration of somatic experiences. Emma also interweaves EMDR therapy into her practice - a neurological, gold-standard trauma treatment. Her central goal in working with clients is to let them feel heard and supported while providing a safe, non-judgmental and loving atmosphere.

<![CDATA[William (Will) Datta is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been working in the mental health field since 2015. Prior to that, he received an undergraduate degree at James Madison University and completed his Masters at Virginia Commonwealth University. Will has worked in a variety of settings including home based services, foster care, supervisory roles, and in a Residential Treatment Center specializing in providing services to individuals with severe and persistent emotional problems and their families.

Will offers the following encouragement to those experiencing mental health concerns:

"If you find it hard to talk or even think about the past, if you find yourself in unhealthy cycles or often ask yourself 'Why am I continuing to have this problem?', if you find yourself becoming overwhelmed easier than you have in the past, if you are experiencing a difficult time through life changes, or if you just need someone to listen, then I am here."

Will utilizes a person-centered approach and therapeutic techniques rooted in CBT, Solution Focused, and Trauma-informed interventions. Most importantly to him, Will views the therapeutic relationship as the crucial aspect of the entire process. Will approaches issues with an empathetic directness where clients will leave sessions feeling empowered, understanding that our struggles “may not be our fault, but they are our responsibility.”

Through these approaches Will aims to serve individuals and families of all ages working through a wide variety of issues including but not limited to trauma, attachment, anxiety, depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and support related to life changes.

Christine Wheeler-Case Jones is a Licensed Professional Counselor within the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has several years of experience in working with children, adolescents, and their families. Christine received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Randolph-Macon College, located in Ashland, VA. She further went on and obtained her Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Argosy University, located in Arlington, VA.

Christine particularly began to take interest in play therapy at this time, as she worked within an elementary school setting and noticed the many therapeutic powers of play. Christine has always been fond in using play and other expressive therapies as a means to meet the child where he or she is. As this passion for play therapy continued to develop, Christine would use her skills specifically when working with children and their families within the home setting. As an intensive in-home therapist in Richmond, VA, Christine would often incorporate play when working with both the child and the family. This passion towards play therapy and working with children continued to benefit as she was later the recipient for the annual award within the Child and Family Services division of Richmond Behavioral Health Authority.

Christine was recognized at this time for her ability to advocate for the children and families within Richmond, VA. Christine has also had experience working within various other domains, including residential,, therapeutic day treatment within the school setting, inpatient psychiatric facilities, and outpatient counseling. Christine has also had experience in providing services with children suffering from abuse and neglect and other traumatic stressors. She has had experience in working with children that have been adopted as well as those in foster care. Christine also has had a range of experience in working with various diagnoses and behavioral issues to include mood disorders, anxiety, ADHD, autism, attachment issues, and PTSD to name a few. Other interests include the use of digital play therapy and gameplay within sessions.

Christine believes in the importance of meeting each child where he or she is. By gaining interest in the client’s world, whether this be through the use of board games, art, music, play, video games, specific apps and other media related sources, Christine believes it is within this therapeutic and welcoming environment that promotes growth and change within oneself.]]>

<![CDATA[Joshua K. Taylor is proud to be a part of Resilience Counseling and Social Skills Center. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Virginia, and has been certified in both Kentucky and West Virginia in the past. He graduated from Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, where he began focus on building experience with children and families.

Mr. Taylor then attended Asbury University in Wilmore, KY, graduating in 2011 with a Masters in social work. While there, he operated as the president of the Asbury MSW Student Fellowship, conducting leadership in addressing community efforts the student body was involved in. During his time with Asbury, he began to work directly with children and adolescents through after school programs in his internships with the local community mental health center. He also assisted in facilitating a summer school-based program geared toward children with both learning difficulties and emotional problems. This continued following graduation, as Mr. Taylor began to not only provide services to children and families, but also develop experience with adults and the chronically mentally ill.

In 2014, Mr. Taylor made the transition to begin fighting the opioid crisis in West Virginia. He managed a program to directly treat those with addiction issues in an outpatient medical setting, building it from its foundation to now treating about 300 adults. He gained experience in the use of medication in treating psychiatric and addiction issues and received extensive training in various therapy methods for treating clients with addiction.

After making the move to Virginia in 2016, Mr. Taylor returned to service toward children and families as an in-home counselor in the Richmond area. It was here that he greatly built his training and became much more experienced in working with families in need. Mr. Taylor has built his craft in therapy much more over the last two years, and now brings that experience to clients.

Mr. Taylor now serves as a clinician providing outpatient therapy to multiple populations, with continued interest in families, those battling with addiction, and a building focus on treating couples. He has also recently assumed the role of Director of Training and Compliance for our practice.]]>

Finding the right therapist can be overwhelming and difficult. Deciding if counseling is even what you want or need can be just as hard. “Is this person just going to try make me re-experience painful memories? Are they going to judge me because I don’t have it all together like everyone else?” Not at all. You deserve to meet with a highly-trained professional whose genuine passion for helping will offer solutions and hope.

Or perhaps you are thinking to yourself, “Everyone looks to me and believes I have it all together, but if they only knew the truth…” You don’t have to silently carry these burdens, and you don’t have to feel alone anymore.

I work with a group of therapists who are committed to combine empathy with resilience-building. We are a practice that knows the best version of yourself exists – we just need to build the roadmap together to get there. For my career, there is no other place that I would rather be than meeting with others and working together towards a meaningful outcome.

I encourage anyone who is hurting, grieving, or struggling to just be OK to call me so we can discuss if my services are the best fit for your needs. For further details, please review my areas of expertise and issues within my realm of training.]]>
